It kinda makes no sense. I'm not embarrassed to admit that this is one of my fave bands. Brian and the boys have been through so many skin changes, it is hard to associate this band with the one that burst out of 1997 but i still like all of their records. Having just released a new album, it is to be expected that they want to show it off, hence the set included several tracks from it, including 'Meds', 'Song To Say Goodbye' and the destined-to-be-a-classic 'Infra-Red', which rivals anything this band have produced. There was a smattering of the old-school Placebo too, with 'Special K' warranting a mention, and the ode to love and lust 'Every You Every Me' going down an absolute storm.Given the quality of the band's own material, it may come as a surprise that the highlight of the set was a cover. As on the recent tour, the band included Kate Bush's 'Running Up That Hill' in the set, and as on the recent tour, it was simply magnificent. Not straying too far from the original, Molko showed the true power in his voice, and the effect was enchanting. Not bad for a bunch of lads in eyeliner. Placebo showed that they are a band at their peak. Few of the bands that came out of the late 1990's have survived, but they have adapted well to the changing musical landscape, and have grown stronger with it. TJ

DOWNLOAD
Give Away Records, the easiest way of being muscally cultured.

Just a few Must Have's

<img style="DISPLAY: block; And perhaps they should, but not because you like the Shins. The album is extremly well put together (not like Caroline) with songs that are instantly easy to get into. The music is simple but precise. Not overly lavish, but with more than enough to keep you interested. with superb combinations of keyboards, acoustic, and electric guitars.
Highlights: 'Caring Is Creepy', 'Know Your Onion' and definitely 'New Slang'.

DOWNLOAD OH INVERTED WORLD
Password: http://sharez.cn

-------------------------------------------------------------

THE SHINS - CHUTES TOO NARROW
'Oh, Inverted World' was nothing short of mind-blowing, which means the follow-up from The Shins, 'Chutes Too Narrow', is going to be under some pretty serious scrutiny. Does it deliver? Oh, yes. Track by track, note for note, each song is magnificent. The production is clearly better, and hence it sounds more contemporary than the first, which could have passed for a lost ’60s treasure with its hazy faraway recording. But on Chutes, Mercer’s voice is singing right next to you, and the change works wonders. The front-and-center feel lends the album a youthful, vulnerable fray, something absent from the precision of the band’s debut, and a dynamic addition to the current batch of songs, which vary from the quote-in-a-long-lost-love-letter variety to the weep-into-weak-coffee-and-chain-smoke kind.

DOWNLOAD CHUTES TOO NARROW
Give Away Records, the easiest way of being muscally cultured.

The Knife (two records)

The Knife - Deep Cuts (2003)
At first the cheap casio beats sound like you've bought a fifth formers demo tape; but continue to listen, and you'll find a nutty off-beat album, (the Knife must have had great fun making it). The Dreijer's (brother and sister) made a fascinating album, very difficult to describe. There's a mix of club tracks and much softer, minimal songs. They're always changing pace and doing some pretty creative and experimental things. I think that there are a couple places where they overproduce the vocals, and some of those slower songs are boring. Very good album though, and if you like electronic music at all, definitely worth checking out.

DOWNLOAD 'Silent Shout'
Give Away Records, the easiest way of being muscally cultured.

Motorpsycho - Blissard (2003)

Motorpsycho's most accessable record in their pre- Let Them Eat Cake area. I have kind of always followed Muse. By the time of "Showbiz" they were mainly a decent Radiohead-copy. "Origin Of Symmetry" and "Absolution" were both OK, with "Plug In Baby" obviously being a classic single. And, while those two albums were pointing in the right direction, I was still completely unprepared for this masterpiece! "Black Holes And Revelations" sees Muse adding lots of new elements to their music, while still sounding undeniably like Muse. Particularly I am particularly fond of the backing vocals, the main reason why Queen pop up as a reference in so many reviews here. I also hear a band utilizing the production ever before, and also adding latino and synth elements among other things. The conclusion: "Black Holes And Revelation" brings Muse right up among the big names of rock, making them able to stand on their own feet and not having to put up with being "Radiohead copycats" anymore.

DOWNLOAD ----->Password: sthdigital
Give Away Records, the easiest way of being muscally cultured.

Anna Ternheim - Somebody Outside (2003)

Anna Ternheim is a 26-year-old singer/songwriter from Stockholm, her debut album "Somebody Outside" is already one of my all-time favourite records. You blush along with Reed while he sings the phrase, "Hey white boy, what you doing uptown?" and you let out an exhausted sigh when he sings "I could sleep for a thousand years" and anyone who hasn't been reduced to tears when hearing the grand paradox, "Heroin... be the death of me. It's my wife" has an exceptionally-repressed soul. The Velvets were the first punk band in the sense that they could not play their given instruments very well. But their songs are much more musically interesting than any punk artist except possibly Elvis Costello because they perfectly understood intelligent pop songwriting.
One of the great albums, as it has both technical precision coupled with imaginative lyrics and a broad spectrum of styles - ranging from the spectacular pop of There She Goes Again to the startlingly gothic and moribund All Tomorrow's Parties. The juxtaposition of the frankly beautiful "Sundy Morning" with the sado-mashocistic "Venus in Furs" was a stroke of genius. I can't help feeling that this was the greatest Velvet album, but the rest are all still good and you should try them all.

Click here to download this masterpiece
Give Away Records, the easiest way of being muscally cultured.

Mando Diao - Hurricane Bar (2005)

Mando Diao claim to have emerged from the town with the highest drug and murder rate in Sweden. It doesn’t show, as their music sounds like a mix of 60’s mod culture mixed with The Who and the Beatles. The opening track, the insistent ‘Cut the Rope’ sounds like an homage to their devotion to succeed. ‘God Knows’ is an intense mix of scrappy vocals and ascending riffs and ‘All My Senses’ sounds like an Oasis b-side.
Mando Diao are strikingly similar to the Libertines, and as much as I’d love to slag them off for being a Libertines rip-off, I can’t really because they’ve been around for the same amount of time. Sublime in its lyrical content, ethereal in its musical composition, and, for lack of a better word, corny in its synthesizer-drenched poppiness, Give Up is a fine example of indie pop music done right. “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight” and “Such Great Heights” demonstrate the twosome’s knack for new-wave peppiness and admiration for synth-pop. Gibbard’s boyish, almost innocent, heart-on-your-sleeve lyrics shine bright on “Nothing Better,” a collaboration with fellow indie comrade Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley fame. “Recycled Air” and “This Place is a Prison” provide for the low-key ambient interludes. In the end, Give Up borders on the “Is it pop? Or is it indie?” question.

Click HERE to download this masterpiece
Give Away Records, the easiest way of being muscally cultured.

Sondre Lerche - Two Way Monologue (2004)

Easy going tunes enriched by an unobtrusive backing band. Lerche's voice is a soothing tenor that he chooses not to push or stretch. "Wet Ground" contains some nice Beach Boys-type harmonies, while "It's Over" separates itself from the rest of the CD with a nice string quartet that lifts above his vocals. Conversely, the pedal steel guitar in "Stupid Memory" seals up the fact that this boy likes to cover his musical bases.
Two Way Monologue is the type of CD that'll end up on everyone's year end "best of" lists…one of those below the radar releases that'll take a few years before everyone else catches up with it. Settling into a blissfully psychedelic drift, the album opts not for the Stones-inspired raunch of before but for Byrds-like guitars, muffled drums and pulsating Hammond organ lines, all topped off by Anton Newcombe's half-stoned, half-shamanic vocals; thanks to standout tracks like "Going to Hell," "Wasting Away" and "Maybe Tomorrow," the cumulative impact makes for the BJM's most mature outing yet, evoking a kind of narcotic euphoria perfectly in keeping with the album's title. In his final days he became increasingly solitary and withdrawn, and yet today his music continues forever reaching out. Not as a cry of pain (often), but rather of one saying "it's okay - it's going to be okay - really." "Pink Moon" is a very short CD - less than 30 minutes long. But it's worth every second of it twice over. Every minute seems to be so impressed and compressed with a quiet vitality that it seems like one of those long distance phone calls from a distant friend. You call, you catch up, you chat for 25 minutes. It seems too short, but you know it's time to move on. Sadly, Nick Drake moved on far too soon. He died from an accidental overdose of anti-depressants in 1974.

Click HERE to download this masterpiece
Give Away Records, the easiest way of being muscally cultured.

The Soundtrack of Our Lives - Behind the Music (2001)

The third album from Sweden's Soundtrack of Our Lives is their most concise and rocking effort. After the daunting eclecticism of 1996's Welcome to the Infant Freebase and the trippy ethereality of 1998's Extended Revelation, the relatively straightforward psychedelic rock of Behind the Music is something of a surprise. The thumping and clattering opener, "Infra Riot," is one of the catchiest songs they've ever done, and things just build from there. The booming drums and sharply strummed acoustic rhythm guitars of "Sister Surround" bear a startling resemblance to late-'60s Stones, followed immediately by a pretty but tense acoustic interlude called "In Someone Else's Mind" that would not sound out of place on a Syd Barrett album, itself the precursor to "Mind the Gap," which recalls the more melodic moments of the post-Barrett Pink Floyd. The album goes on in this vein for just under an hour, with one terrific song after another that sounds immediately like some classic forebear (there are hints of the Stooges, Love, and even Zappa in spots), but has the presence and strength to stand up on its own merits. Behind the Music lacks the totality and sonic impact of Extended Revelation, but the songs are more consistently memorable. Impressive stuff, and probably the Soundtrack of Our Lives album to start with for all but the most devoted psych/prog fan.
